Russia is just huge isn’t it. It takes up such a large footprint when we look at a globe and/or world map. So naturally the question arises, could it be bigger than the smallest planet in the solar system, Pluto? Let’s find out, shall we?
So, is Russia bigger than Pluto? Russia is not bigger than Pluto, though it is pretty close. Russia has a surface area of 17.1 million km² compared to the larger, 17.6 million km² of Pluto.
It’s not always been this way, though.
In fact, it wasn’t until NASAs New Horizon Mission in 2015 that the new data for Pluto was confirmed.
Up until that point, it was believed that Pluto was actually smaller than it is, at around 16.7 million km².
So with this all in mind, it naturally leads us to question the size of Russia and Pluto, so let’s look at the numbers.
But first.
Is Russia Wider Than Pluto?
Russia is wider than Pluto, with a width from east to west of 9,000km. In contrast, as a spherical planet, the width (or diameter) of Pluto is just 2,376.6 km.
Just because Russia is wider, try not to get confused.
Besides, Pluto is spherical, and thus needs to be ‘flattened’ out for a real, and true comparison.
How Big Is Russia?
Russia is the largest country on Earth.
Here are the important numbers for Russia in regard to its size:
- Total Area (Km²): 17,098,242
- Total Area (Mi²): 6,601,665
- Land Area (Km²): 16,376,870
- Land Area (Mi²): 6,323,142
- % of World Land Mass: 11%
So 11% of the world is actually made up by Russia!
How Big Is Pluto?
Pluto is the smallest planet in the solar system, and around 154x smaller than planet Earth.
Here are the important numbers for Pluto in regard to its size:
- Radius: 1,188.3 km.
- Equatorial Circumference: 7,232.
- Distance From Earth: 5.1744 billion km.
Lastly
So, Russia is not bigger than Pluto.
And the fact that Russia is the largest country on Earth, tells us that no country is.
But it is wider, at least when we compare the flat country with the spherical diameter of Pluto.
